Write a brief reflection on your experience in this course. How will you use these skills now that the class is over?

  1. Overall, I really enjoyed this class. As a science major, it is rare that I get to write papers and learn about things other than chemistry and biology, so this course was a nice change of pace. We learned a lot about the rhetorical situation, and how to construct text based around an audience. I have applied these new skills to my personal life, and I now analyze almost every conversation I have with someone to determine what their argument is and who their audience actually is. In my courses, I will use what I learned to develop reports that are understood by my audience, meaning that the language I use will be related to the topic at hand, instead of using just general terms. Watching King of the Hill has taught me that most things in life are not just surface level, for there is always a deeper meaning when it comes to everyday situations. I look forward to applying the skills I learned in this class to my future courses, and will miss having a class that isn’t taught straight from a textbook.

  2. Overall, I thought this class was very interesting. I enjoyed the different and unique approach to teaching and would look forward to each class knowing they were never going to be the same. I enjoyed how each project we did was different than the other and how everyone could share their work. I really enjoyed how the students were able to interact with not only the professor but as well as with each other. The assignments have helped me be able to analyze things in a new light and I think that that will be very beneficial in upcoming years.

  3. I have never had a class quite like this one. I really enjoyed the unique teaching approaches that were brought to the class. There was much more dialogue than I have been accustomed to. There was also a lot of peer feedback and teacher feedback for each project. Other classes that I have taken unless you specifically asked for feedback you weren't going to receive any. I think the push of this improved everyone's work and everyone's confidence in asking for help. I improved organizational and communication skills and I will be able to use both in my everyday life. I also have no doubt that rhetoric is permanently burned into my mind. I learned that there are multiple ways to analyze everything. This will help me in the future to not look at everything as black and white and truly try to find a message in what I'm reading, watching, or listening to.

  4. This class has been like no other for me. I loved the open atmosphere, it didn't feel like a normal class room and that's one of the things I loved about it. Because of the atmosphere, I felt more open and relaxed in the discussions and able to retain the information we learned throughout the semester. We focused a lot of the class on rhetorical analysis and that has really helped me understand sources more. I apply this to my other classes by thinking over the material and how it's presented as well as why it is. Rhetorical analysis has helped me improve on my studying techniques and my communication techniques as well. Also we learned how to present our materials in different medias. I learned that I can present my argument not only just through an essay, but with the help of Premier Pro, I can make a video and/or a slide show to present my ideas. This has truly been a wonderful class, and I only wish that my other classes were like this one as well.

  5. David created a unique and fun atmosphere in the classroom that made it easy to go to class and learn. The unorthodox teaching style and variety of different assignments kept me interested in the class. I enjoyed watching episodes of King of the Hill and analyzing each one rhetorically because it showed me that there is much more behind things like animated comedy tv shows than just the corny jokes. I now use the skills we demonstrated in analyzing a rhetorical situation when reading papers, looking at images, and watching videos. I liked the assignments we did that involved different software because it was much more interesting and fun than just writing a bunch of essays. This class has taught me what rhetoric actually is and the power that words can have when trying to inform, convince, or persuade an audience. I believe I have become a better reader and writer after taking this course and have also learned how to use different software programs that I will be able to use in my future classes for projects and presentations and perhaps in future jobs. Overall my experience in this class was a positive one. Peace out David, it's been real.

  6. This class was very different than others that I have been in, and I really enjoyed it. I looked forward to class everyday because it was always exciting and fun; I never knew what topics would come up in class discussion. I liked how open class discussions were. This and constant feedback from the professor and my peers on my assignments really helped me see things from different perspectives on rhetoric, while allowing my organizational skills to improve greatly. I also enjoyed how our assignments focused on digital media. I think communication on this media will benefit me greatly in the future since the world is becoming more digitized. This class has ultimately allowed me to effectively see and communicate how rhetoric plays a part in everyday life. I believe this is a crucial skill to have not only in regards to academia, but in life as a whole.

  7. My experience in this class very unusual when comparing it to any other class I have taken. This class used a large amount of discussion based teaching. Questions were always asked during discussions, and it left us to think about our answers before we said anything. Through this class I have learned to become more of a critical reader and analyst. Through the many revisions of the rhetorical analysis it taught me that there is always something you could add and continue to critique. This class had deepened my understanding of how to analyze different pieces of rhetoric, and how to be able to understand them. Upon looking back on this class, it was definitively one of my favorite classroom experiences, and not one that I will forget soon. Thanks for the unique teaching experience David.

  8. I really enjoyed the open forum this class provided. I liked how we were put into situations of defending a position and then flipping the script to see the opposition's point of view. The feedback from the lecturer were great as they were direct and useful. I liked how much technology was put into the class as it made you pay attention to the way you present things. I found the class analyses of different mediums of rhetoric to be enlightening as well as fun. I was glad that this was more than an English class based around memorizing the fallacies; it was some real life lessons on how to talk to people.

  9. Overall, this class was definitely more helpful than i expected it to be. Initially, i was upset that a biology major was required to take an English class, but it actually helped me out a decent amount. I learned more about how to detect the deeper meaning in articles, speeches, and political cartoons. One of the biggest strengths that i acquired throughout this class is the ability to make projects using Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition, along with being able to use Soundation to really create an experience that truly embodies my argument. I enjoyed the class discussions because they are more engaging than reading. Many of my friends hated their English professors this semester due to excessive reading and not really being taught much. I can truly say that this class will help me in my future endeavors.

  10. I enjoyed this class and the teaching style that it provided. Most of my classes are just sitting down, listening to lecture, and taking notes. This class was very open with the amount of discussion and it fostered a lot of professor/student interaction. I learned a lot more about dissecting certain situations and trying to find a deeper meaning than whatever may meet the eye. I became more experienced with computer programs such as Premiere Pro. Overall, I enjoyed this class and I learned a lot.

  11. Overall, I enjoyed this unique approach to learning academic material. Rhetoric is an important concept that can be applied to all future careers, and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to analyze rhetoric in a new way. We not only focused on the material in an academic setting, but also applied what we were learning to everyday situations, which has helped me better my ability to analyze and understand the real world context of the rhetorical situation. Overall, the discussions helped me to broaden my understanding of material and listen to all sides of an argument, which is a skill I am sure I will use in the future.
