Multimedia Argument Reflection

This is a counterpart to your Multimedia Argument project.

Write 200-250 words reflecting on the choices you made for your multimedia argument. What program did you use? What theme did you choose? What was the argument? What images did you choose and why? What sounds you choose, and rhythm patterns? Tempo (speed)? How will your argument affect your audience?

  1. For my multimedia project, I wanted to make sure the program and sound I used went along with the information I was trying to get across to the audience, so I used soundation, lightroom, and premiere pro. I knew this would be a hard task considering we only have pictures and certain types of music to work with. I tried to take the theme for my project on a more futuristic track to make people start thinking about the future. Making the music sound like it is from the future enhanced my argument to change the way to world is today to better the future. I chose to stick with just images of the different types of renewable energy to persuade people that renewable energy is the only option for the future. My argument is to have everyone in the world rely on renewable energy sources for all the energy in the world because it is so easily renewed and less pollution will go into the air. I tried to keep an upbeat and playful tone and rhythm to go along with the pictures to get people excited about the future and Mother Nature. I really wanted to make the music have a futuristic and upbeat vibe to make sure people realize that renewable energy is a good thing and will be very beneficial to the world.

  2. For my multimedia argument project I used soundation and adobe premiere pro. My argument was about a specific treatment for depression so I chose to introduce my topic in an ominous and serious tone and then slowly lighten the mood as the slideshow went on. The argument is that people suffering from depression should seek psychotherapy for treatment and not just medications. I start my slideshow with sad and depressing images to set the mood and introduce the topic and then I also used images of drugs to show that they should not be used and images of therapy to show that it should be used. At the end of the slideshow I selected happy and bright images to show the benefits of psychotherapy and to show what it can do for people suffering from depression. I put a couple of spaces in between images in the slideshow to separate ideas. The first break is from introducing general depression and medications and the second break comes in between medications and therapy treatment. I chose sounds that created a serious and ominous tone. These included a cello, violin, and viola. The sounds I chose to lighten the mood were woodwinds because they created an optimistic tone and offered a good contrast to the string sounds. As the slideshow progresses, the sounds of the woodwinds appear more often to slowly fade out the depressed tone and to bring about the happier and brighter tone. My argument will affect my audience by showing them that medications may not be the solution to depression and that people suffering from depression should really seek out psychotherapy for treatment because the benefits seem to be more apparent than the benefits from antidepressants.

  3. For my multimedia project, I used Soundation and Premiere Pro. My overall theme is the possibility of change, specifically due to education. My argument is that the federal government should provide more funding for nonprofits supporting education in Central America. In my multimedia argument, I specifically focus on the impact that improving education can have on Central America, including improvements to healthcare and engineering. I begin my argument with images depicting the current living conditions in Central America, then add pictures that focus on children in poverty. This appeal to pathos allows the audience to feel sympathy towards the current situation and helps emphasize the need for change. I then switch to images depicting classroom settings and students, then shift to graduates who are contributing to important fields such as healthcare and engineering, which shows the drastic change made possible by education. The music I use begins with a low, slow sound, which elicits feelings of sympathy when connected to the pictures of poverty. A beat gradually emerges, then all sound except the underlying bass cuts out between the pictures of poverty and the pictures of education. This is to emphasize the change I am arguing for. When the music begins again, it is more upbeat and positive, with a faster rhythm and more of a range in sounds, as opposed to the monotonous low sounds. However, it retains its serious quality. Overall, my argument will help convince my audience that supporting more funding for education in Central America is beneficial and necessary.

  4. For my multimedia project, I used Soundation and Premiere Pro. I chose an intense and urban theme for the style of my music and the pictures that I chose. I wanted these themes because my argument lives in the realm of college and professional basketball. Basketball is a fast paced sport with many exciting plays I have been interested in basketball for a while and I have noticed that urban music/culture is a big part of the game. The argument I made is that the one-and-done rule should be abolished. I went about this by adding pictures of high powered recruits, NBA superstars that went to the pros out of high school, and political cartoons portraying how unnecessary the mandatory year out of high school is before entering the league. I chose a tempo of 95 because I felt that it was fast enough to keep up with the overall feeling of the NBA and college basketball, but isn't too fast to where it distracts from the pictures. My argument will inform my audience about the problem of the one-and-done rule if they do not already know about it and will work to persuade people's opinions on the rule. My hope is that the combination of pictures and music will be powerful enough to portray my viewpoint, even with the absence of words.

  6. For my multimedia project, I used Soundation and Premiere Pro. My music has two very different themes but they both support my argument that the US Department of Health and Services should implement a smoking ban on all public facilities. The first theme that it starts out with provokes a happy feeling through a relaxing guitar and the gradual introduction of some upbeat drums. During the happy part of my song, I showed pictures of people in public places, such as parks, restaurants, bars, and playgrounds. I made sure that in these pictures everyone was smiling and having a good time and you could see the joy they were displaying. I also included pictures of no smoking signs every so often to make sure people associated this happy feeling with a smoking ban. I wanted people to see that with a smoking ban you could enjoy public places, breathe in fresh air, and just overall have a good time. Halfway through I do a dramatic change to the sound of a heartbeat monitor that has a very suspenseful and intense theme. I started showing pictures of people coughing on smoke and people smoking in public in the beginning when the heart beat monitor was going fast. I then showed someone looking at a scan of their lungs and created a short story of their life when the beats started to get really slow and eventually flat line. I showed them in a hospital bed, pictures of a loved one holding their hand in the bed, and pictures of their family crying in the hospital. And on the last beat I showed a person blowing smoke in the shape of a skull to represent death and then put in a picture of an empty hospital bed when it flat lines. The heart beat monitor started fast and gradually got slower and as the beat got slower the sound of an actual heartbeat was introduced and the volume intensified to create a more dramatic effect. I also decided to only show the pictures when the heart beat sounded to create even more suspense and to act like you were the person opening and closing your eyes slower and slower until eventually “you” died. My goal was to associate smoking with death.

  7. For my multimedia argument, I argued that Congress should not eliminate the historic tax credit. Without the historic tax credit, historic preservation would not be possible, which is why Congress cannot eliminate this tax. Using soundation, I created a song that started with a simple, calm beat. This represented the historic monument or building standing on its own waiting to be reconstructed. I added in more uplifting beats to show how revitalizing the building positively affects our society. Each new sound adds more depth to the song and gives it more potential, which is exactly what preservation does to buildings. Preservation gives these buildings new life and a new purpose, while still keeping the history our nation is built upon intact. I kept the main beat the same through the whole song to represent the history of the building, and the new beats represent the building being renovated and having new life. For my images, I referenced the national register of historic places to find buildings that have been preserved and transformed. I started with older pictures of places that have since been destroyed. Then, I showed images of buildings before and after historic preservation, such as Mount Vernon. Finally, I showed images of buildings that stand today as museums for the history that they were a part of. My argument will show my audience how beautiful and mesmerizing history is and how important yet simple it is to preserve it.

  8. For my multimedia argument I used Soundation and Adobe Premier Pro. My argument was about the use of laptops in classes, and my belief that professors should allow the option of them in class. Because this was my topic, I had a bit of a difficulty choosing the theme for my music. While I enjoy music of all kinds, I found that it was difficult for me to come up with my own. However, the music that I created has a sort of techno-funky theme. The music starts off with a base, and then different components are added, and then at the end I tie the music back together by ending it with the same sound choices that I used to start it. The pictures I selected were a representation of the movement throughout my argument in the video. I started off with pictures that were mentioned in my video argument, such as a picture of Clemson, laptop choices, and a few methods for taking notes. While I have most of my pictures selected, I still feel like I'm missing a few that I need to add in to tie my argument all together. The sounds are more of a deeper sounding rhythm, all of them from the "urban 95" option on Soundation. It also has a few sounds in the middle of it that adds a bit of diversity, such as some percussion and woodwinds. My argument, if it projects the way I had planned, should require the audience to listen and understand my argument, as well as the counterargument within my research. It should allow the audience to form their own opinions from the information and think about the difference in note taking and the use of laptops in college classrooms.

  9. For my multimedia argument I used Soundation and Adobe Premiere Pro. My music shifts from a more slower pace feel to an upbeat one with an urban undertone that becomes more pronounced; I did this by using electronica 125 in Soundation. My argument is that the minimum wage in America should be raised to better support workers with the rising cost of living. I first show pictures of minimum wage workers in the past and their protests for a higher minimum pay, and workers today. I match this with a lower pitched sound sound and subtleness of an urban bass to show that the future is coming. This serves as the base of my music. Next, I add a high pitched mysterious melody as I transition toward images of workers protesting currently. This melody matches how people today are extremely active on raising the minimum wage while the mysterious tone shows how they are unsure of the outcome. Towards the end, I add a high pace beat, creating a happier feeling. I paired this with images of politicians supporting the movement and people holding signs that show the minimum pay being raised in certain states. The urban feel is more pronounced representing the it currently being raised across America. I end with an image of a sign that says “we are worth more” to show how the workers fights led to a higher one. Through my use of images and music, my intent is that the audience will see how it must be raised sine workers are struggling to support themselves and their families on little pay with the expensive price of living.

  10. For my multimedia argument I used both Premier Pro and Soundation. I wanted to create a kind of ominous tone that captures teenage angst for my music. I used a lot of more techy sounding beats to sound more youthful and appealing to teenagers that think that they're cool or badass. My argument focuses on the use of ecigaretts within the younger generations. I focused this broad argument on the rules that Clemson has established regarding the use of e-cigs on campus. Clemson states that their campus is a tobacco free campus in order to ensure the health of their students. However, Clemson does not strictly enforce these rules as students all across campus are using ecigs on a daily basis. I used a few photos of teenagers smoking e-cigs and then I used two other photos that captured the use of e-cigs or even cigarettes. I then edited the pictures so they all looked similar in some aspect to tie them all together. I mainly wanted to pull my music that I created from the theme of the pictures, which was a kind of dark and edgy theme almost. I really wanted to focus on the teenage angst aspect of things because I think that idea goes hand-in-hand with the younger generation's use of e-cigs. I tried to keep a steady beat and added on to each successive beat so they would be in sequence with each other. The tempo was pretty fast pace but I tried to incorporate some slower beats to create a balance in the rhythm. I think that my audience will be more able to relate to my topic now that I've added different aspects of media.

  12. My multimedia argument was on the parking situation at Clemson. Since my research proposal focused on how the problems with parking could be solved, I decided to focus my multimedia argument on the alternatives Clemson offers that do not include parking, such as the CATBUS or the BikeShare program. My music was made on soundation, and was created using various tracks that were 120 beats per minute. I used an orchestra in the background to create my base layer, and added different beats on top of it to create an upbeat song. I wanted the song to be upbeat and slightly suspenseful because parking is boring, and riding around parking lots to find a spot can be rather grueling. My slideshow starts out with images of the various parking lots on Clemson’s campus, and then it transitions to images of individuals who work for Parking Services. Various images of the CATBUS are shown, including ones showing the numerous wrecks the CATBUS has been involved in this semester. I decided to include these images to show that the CATBUS is not safe or reliable, and that driving yourself to campus is the safest option. The Tiger Transit system is also shown, as well as various images of the BikeShare program. Images of the parking meters are also shown, as well as a parking ticket to prove that Parking Services often shows no mercy when it comes to who can park where. By using suspenseful and upbeat music, the viewer should feel some sort of emotion towards the parking situation at Clemson.

  13. For the multimedia argument I used the program Flatio. I used Flatio because I went with a serious approach to my argument, and it was difficult to find serious prerecorded sounds and rhythms on Soundation. My theme was serious, because my argument was for the death penalty. The bass drum was used as a heartbeat, it was meant to be ominous and a constant sound that was going on throughout the duration of the piece. The chimes were used, because the low notes that are being played on it can symbolize death, or bring the audience to a place of sorrow or sincerity. The timpani were set to play low notes to continue with the theme of the piece being serious. The tempo was made to be slow, to add an eerie affect to the music and to add a deeper tone of it being serious. The images I choose were ones of infamous killers, headlines of newspapers after they were caught, and images of electric chairs, hanging stations, and different methods of executions. The purpose of the images were to almost inspire a sense of rage or resentment towards the killers, and then a sense of relief when the executions methods were shown, mainly due to knowing the killers were sentenced to death, or had died in some other way.

  14. To construct my music for the multimedia argument I used Soundation. My topic was on DACA, I decided to create a more informative piece. I wanted to show how many people care about DACA and that people will always be fighting for it. To show this I chose fast paced, electronic music. The piece started off slow and there I showed pictures of Trump, symbolizing that he is the one that is slowing down everyone's lives that fell under DACA (in terms of education, freedom, working). Then right when the tempo of the song picks up is when pictures from DACA rallies begin to appear. From there the beat is pretty repetitive. I did this to show that the people fighting for DACA aren’t going to ever stop until they know that they are safe again. The beat that they are marching to isn’t going to fade. I want to show people how passionate people are about this cause and I think this video will do just that. The music brings a feeling of excitement to the the topic and the pictures from the rally is complimenting the music and used as supporting evidence to the overall argument.

  15. For the multimedia argument assignment, I used Soundation, Adobe Lightroom, and Adobe Premiere Pro. I used Soundation for my music, Lightroom for my Slideshow, and Premiere Pro for my video. The argument was that meat eaters should stop eating meat. I chose lots of images of cute baby animals, animals being slaughtered/processed, and pictures of pepole eating meat. I am appealing to pathos throughout the whole video, because I am trying to make my audience feel very emotional. The music that I chose for the video has a very fast tempo. If you heard the song on its own, you probably would not think of your diet; however, I wanted a fast pace song with a strong beat, so that my audience would feel like they are rushed or in a hurry to make a change. First, I showed lots of pictures of animals, making my audience feel happy and warm. Gradually, I started showing sadder pictures of animals in processing plants, making my audience feel sad. After, I showed pictures of families and friends eating meat, making my audience realize that they are the reason the animals are there and being killed. Lastly, I showed more cute animals, some with their mothers, to really tug at the heartstrings. Showing images of mothers and babies usually affects women more so than men, because of maternal instinct. I think overall my argument is very effective.

  16. For my Multimedia Argument project, I used Soundation, Adobe Lightroom, and Adobe Premier Pro. My argument for the project was ocean pollution is a much bigger threat to us than we realize. To portray this, I used images that were depressing, yet shocking. The images had to be shocking in order to make the audience realize what the sadness in what they were looking at, as well as instilling the eagerness to make a change in the problems that are presented. Some images consisted of places where trash covers every inch of the ocean’s surface, while others showed the effects of ocean pollution on wildlife. I wanted the sounds accompanying the pictures to be slow and sad with a build up to the peak of the presentation, where I showed the pictures of the animals. When the presentation reaches these pictures, the song is the loudest with the most audio channels being used. Ideally, I would have used string instruments, but with Soundation I had to use more electronic sounds, so I chose ones that had more lower tones and were slower to mimic the tones that would be played on a string instrument for this slideshow. This argument should affect the audience by instilling the will to change oneself in order to help the oceanic environment and animals.

  17. The program that I used for my multimedia project was Soundation to create the background music and then Premiere Pro in order to assemble all of my elements together. The theme that I decided to use is a gloomy experience for the beginning of the project while showing the increase in cancer diagnoses followed by an optimistic feeling while showing pictures describing the newly-discovered cancer treatments. The argument is that cancer patients should seek other forms of cancer treatment before settling on chemotherapy due to the fact that cancer recurrence has a higher probability after chemo. The images that I chose include cancer statistics such as the number of new diagnoses each year along with the probability data for inquiring cancer at some time in an individual’s life. The tempo and rhythm was slow and somber towards the beginning followed by an increased lighter tempo towards the middle and end due to the desire of creating an optimistic view of the most recent cancer treatments. I’m hoping that my argument will affect cancer patient’s view of their future lives. Many cancer patients can be confused and lead to believe that a pessimistic attitude is all they can have. They may be losing hope due to prior cancer treatment being ineffective, and hopefully this informational project will change their attitude and truly give them hope in being able to defeat this ruthless disease.

  18. I used Soundation and Adobe Premier Pro. My topic is that cancer patients should choose stem cell therapy as part of their rehabilitation and treatment. Creating the music for my slideshow was difficult because I tried to create a somber/serious tone, but still try to make it positive since my argument is for stem cell treatment and not against it. I definitely wanted to incorporate the Synth_Pad_Dream and Synth_Organ_Dream to start out because it has a serious yet inspirational tone. It allowed me to build up the music, and switch to more positive pictures which grabs the audience's attention. I first chose pictures in black and white with the opening music to create this serious tone to get the audience’s attention. Then, I incorporated some research pictures and stem cell pictures, and I chose a more techno tone that was a little upbeat. This creates interest in the science, or stem cell treatment, that I am presenting. The beat at this point is starting to build which creates a more positive tone, and this is where a shift in attitude occurs in my slideshow. The final portion of my slideshow shows happier patients and people that have beaten cancer to show the audience that stem cell treatments and therapy work much better than other treatment options. The piano music during this portion is upbeat and lifting which creates an optimistic tone and rightfully ends my slideshow.

  19. For my music, I used the program Soundation. I chose to create a piece that sounded adventurous, as if the listener was going into space themselves. My argument was pro NASA funding, and to make this argument I thought it best to create a sound that brought the listener to space. I used the sounds under the electronica tab in Soundation. These clips have an electronic vibe to them, to represent the technology that comes with space exploration. I used sounds from an organ, which has a deeper tone, representing deep space exploration. The music I created builds onto itself, symbolizing the process of going into space, and how there are steps that build onto one another to make such a task possible. I also had the sound of bells which added a positivity to the idea of space exploration. My tempo leaned towards a faster pace, which I correlate with a positive outlook on the subject. In my patterns, I found that I needed to be consistent with my instruments and clips to create an appealing sound. For my images, I decided that I would focus on showing some of the accomplishments NASA has already accomplished to display what the agency can do. I also showed images of deep space to show what is still out there to be discovered. To organize my argument, I begin by showing deep space, with images of galaxies, and then showed pictures of some of the plants, in an order that got closer and closer to earth. This works to show the many things NASA can explore, but also works to show that NASA contributes to learning more about the earth. I then display pictures of Mars, to represent an important goal NASA currently holds. Following these images, I show pictures from the International Space Station as well as the Apollo missions and landing on the moon. These pictures work to spark American pride, which has occurred in response to some of NASA’s greatest accomplishments. Because of these pictures, along with others in the video, I believe that my audience will experience the joy and pride that comes from successes in space with NASA. This will spark support for NASA and hence accomplish my goal of arguing for NASA’ funding. The music plays into this as well, as the music allows the listener to feel as if they themselves are exploring in space. By combining the use of images and music, I think I was able to effective display the positivity that comes along with NASA’s funding.

  20. I used Soundation and Premiere Pro for this multimedia argument. I made an effort to make my music somewhat upbeat and pleasant sounding because of my topic of why organ trade/donation should be made legal. I don't think music that had lower tones or is somber sounding would have created the same effect because it would have created almost a negative mood towards the topic. I wanted the overall theme to be one of happiness. I think this was an effective way to make my argument through the use of different sounds, while keeping the overall tone the same throughout. I used pictures that depicted the benefits of organ trade such as one that depicts the difference in life span when someone receives a kidney from a living vs. deceased donor. I show pictures of donors and recipients with signs saying things such as "thank you!" I also used a picture that discusses organ donation in general which states that one person can save 8 lives through donation. I think these pictures help my argument of why organ trade should be legal because if you can make someone this happy and prolong their life, you should. I think through both pictures and the optimistic music, it creates a positive attitude towards the idea of legalizing organ trade.

  21. I chose Soundation for the multimedia argument. I chose to align with my previous standpoint of being against GMO’s. I wanted my slideshow to be calming, a bit serious, and slowly become more upbeat. I chose images that introduced my argument. Also, I included charts that displayed supporting evidence of herbicide resistance and antibiotic resistance. However, I did not want an overload of words on the slideshow, so I balanced it out with simple pictures, like a field or woman at a grocery store. Furthermore, I edited some of the photographs to be black and white to make a clear distinction between my evidence against GMO’s, versus my positive evidence for non-GMO’s. To accompany my visual argument, I chose piano, bongos, congas, the guitar, and a synthesizer (in the Urban tab). The slow piano was my main focus which I slowly complemented with bongos and the guitar to lighten the mood. Throughout, the synthesizer simply acted as glue which enhanced the song and created a cohesive sound. I chose the slowest tempo, 90 BPM, because the slowness embodied the formal tone that I was hoping to convey. By the end, the music was joyful with lively bongos and a guitar to evoke a positive emotional response in the viewer, and draw a positive connection between the music and eating non-GMO's. In addition, my argument highlights the downsides to GMO’s, shows the alternative of organic food, and encourages consumers to be conscientious at the grocery store and to simply be aware of food labels.

  22. I used Soundation for my multimedia project’s background music as it seemed the most user-friendly option while using Premiere pro for creating my slideshow. Soundation had a large selection of futuristic sounds that could be combined to make an anxious mood that I wanted to spread throughout my work. I chose the dystopian mood because I wanted to give the viewer the feeling that there was something horribly flawed about the thought process of government control over individual health choices. I chose images that told a story. It builds from a plague, mass graves, forced medications and vaccinations to tyrannical medical control and the Nazi party. This is supposed to be a timeline where we are sitting in the middle of; a timeline that we still have time to change. The music I created was meant to match that feeling of growing anxiety to couple with the understanding of the dystopia we are quickly approaching. It builds in from the beginning, with the chorus of instruments coming to be a wave of sound. The sounds I chose also have an undercurrent drum beat, to give a viewer this feeling that there is power still in the masses. The synth component of the music is also an homage to the intro (and title track) to Van Halen’s 1984, which itself is a reference to the George Orwell novel. 1984 (Orwell’s version) is a novel about a dystopia where the government controls all of human existence, and my argument that the government controlling our medication intake is a step down that towards that future. My slideshow also has the added theme of developing from the past to this new pinnacle of public health to as the government begins taking control, we really are slipping back into the past with this future we are choosing.
